Home Bar or Wine Cellar…or both?

It is great to have both, your own home bar and a wine cellar. The home bar can be integrated into contemporary open floor plan kitchen family rooms and can become yet another social gathering area when entertaining…however there is a misconception that a wine cellar itself could be a gathering area. Please allow me to differ since the ideal ambient temperature for ultimate wine conservation inside a wine cellar should be 55 degrees Fahrenheit maintained by wine refrigeration and the treasured wine collection should see as little light as possible, not even getting into the 60% moisture content which should be kept constant. So as one can imagine, living inside a wine cellar might not be the optimum lifestyle choice both for people and the wine itself.

Another issue has to do with the aesthetics of the wine cellar itself and how much emphasis is put on that aspect of the project. Any wine cellar configuration can range in price very drastically as size, location and options vary. Following the latest trends (although trends aren’t necessarily the way to go but rather classicism…I would personally recommend classicism with a flair of contemporary or even all out contemporary) can also get pricy depending upon these few so called cool options such as backlighting LED, ultracompact surfacing aka “thin” tile, mixed textures, glass, high end wood materials or going for a very unique look, or simply build in unusual places.

All this being said a wine cellar remains a great addition to your home, has a good resale market value and almost always is a good conversation piece!
